September and October are always the busiest months of the year for the Backcountry Patrol. After the Team Ortho Women Rock race in St. Paul, the last Saturday in August, we take a breather for Labor Day weekend. The second weekend of September is always the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in Cable, Wisconsin. The following weekend is the Cancer Awareness Ribbon Ride in Cambridge, MN, and often a trail run put on by the American Birkebeiner, also in Cable, WI. The first weekend of October marks the annual 22,000 runner Twin Cities Marathon and TCM 10-mile in Minneapolis and St. Paul. This year, our friends at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area have added a new race called Oremageddon on that same weekend. The end of October brings Team Ortho's largest race of the year, the Monster Dash, a Halloween themed costume race reputed to be the largest of its type in the country.

The Backcountry Trail Patrol, Team Ortho Foundation and Emergicare Medical Training have adopted St. John Ambulance Cymru-Wales' "Save-A-Life September" program and are working together to train as many people as possible in "Hands Only CPR" this month.

earn your Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification with CPR or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) re-certification. This fast paced, two and a half day, (20 hour) course is for anyone who is rides a mountain bike. The class is very "hands-on" on the beautiful autumn trails of the Chequamegon Area Mountain Bike Association (CAMBA) - participants will learn fundamental wilderness medical care and injury prevention, while developing important decision making skills for outdoor emergencies. Additionally, we will cover emergency bike repairs, sports nutrition and hydration. This backcountry medical training course covers all the WFA curriculum, emphasizing on situations common to mountain biking.

In the past, we have attracted new members through our annual Wilderness First Aid and bi-annual Wilderness First Responder (WFR) classes, held each winter/spring.
